SERVICE SPECIFIC QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

What are the benefits of choosing full-synthetic vs conventional oil?
â–¼

Full-synthetic dexos® oil, which is required for most modern Chevrolet engines, offers:

  • Superior viscosity stability
  • Better protection against wear at high temperatures
  • Longer intervals (typically 7,500 miles or more) compared to conventional oil

This is essential for protecting complex components like turbochargers (common in the Chevy Equinox and Traverse) and the GM Oil Life Monitoring system, helping to prevent damaging issues like Low Speed Pre-Ignition (LSPI).

How can I tell if my vehicle needs an oil change before the scheduled interval?
â–¼

Rely on your GM Oil Life Monitoring (OLM) System. The OLM automatically monitors driving conditions, engine revolutions, and temperature to calculate oil degradation.

Important: Do not go past the point where the OLM indicates the oil life is 0%. Your owner's manual will provide a maximum mileage interval (often 7,500 miles) that should not be exceeded even if the OLM is slightly above 0%.

For vehicles used for heavy towing near Hocking Hills, OH, or frequent short trips, the OLM may trigger service sooner than the maximum mileage.

Is there an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) oil specification I should follow?
â–¼

Yes. All late-model Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac vehicles require dexos® oil, which is an exclusive GM engine oil specification. It's designed specifically for your engine's internal components, especially those with turbochargers.

Using anything other than the required genuine dexos® oil can potentially void portions of your powertrain warranty and compromise engine performance. Look for the dexos® logo on the front label.

What does 'check engine light' (CEL) mean, and is it safe to drive with it on?
â–¼

The Check Engine Light (CEL) means your vehicle's computer (ECM/PCM) has detected an issue related to emissions or engine performance.

If the light is solid: You can usually drive to our service center in Logan, OH for a diagnostic check.

If the light is flashing: Pull over immediately, as this indicates a severe misfire that is rapidly causing damage to the catalytic converter and you should not drive.

What is the difference between a minor and major service?
â–¼

Minor Service: Typically an oil/filter change, tire rotation, and a multi-point inspection.

Major Service: For Chevrolet often occurs around 30,000, 60,000, or 90,000 miles and includes:

  • Replacement of spark plugs
  • Transmission fluid flush
  • Differential fluid change (critical for Silverado trucks)
  • Inspection/replacement of drive belts and hoses, as specified in your GM maintenance schedule
How do anti-lock brakes (ABS) and traction control systems (TCS) affect regular brake maintenance?
â–¼

ABS and TCS do not change the physical wear rate of the brake pads and rotors. However, they rely on functional wheel speed sensors and a master cylinder to work correctly.

If the ABS light or Traction Control light illuminates, it requires immediate attention by our certified technicians to diagnose the electronic components of the braking system. Ignoring these lights could compromise the safety features on your Chevy Tahoe or other vehicle.

What is the difference between a tire balancing and a wheel alignment?
â–¼

Tire Balancing: Compensates for uneven weight distribution within the tire and wheel assembly, preventing shaking or vibration in the steering wheel or seat.

Wheel Alignment: Adjusts the angle of the wheels (camber, caster, toe) relative to the vehicle and the road, which is critical for steering and even tire wear.

Both are crucial for maximizing the life of your expensive Chevy truck tires when navigating winding Route 664 near Logan.

When should I service my Chevrolet's coolant and transmission fluid?
â–¼

Coolant: Chevrolet's advanced Dex-Cool coolant is designed for longevity, typically requiring service every 5 years or 150,000 miles.

Transmission Fluid: The transmission fluid change interval is typically around 97,500 miles under normal conditions for many models, or sooner if you frequently tow or drive in demanding conditions.

Our technicians use only genuine ACDelco fluids which are formulated specifically for GM transmissions, like the 10-speed found in the Silverado 1500.

What makes the brake rotors on my Chevrolet last longer than my previous vehicle's?
â–¼

Many modern Chevrolet models are equipped with Duralifeâ„¢ brake rotors. This GM-exclusive technology uses a special, proprietary process to harden the rotor's surface, which provides:

  • Better resistance to corrosion and warping
  • Rotors that can potentially last up to twice as long as traditional rotors

This gives you superior long-term braking performance on your Chevrolet Traverse or Equinox.

What information does the Multi-Point Vehicle Inspection (MPVI) at Don Wood Chevrolet cover?
â–¼

Our complimentary Chevrolet Multi-Point Vehicle Inspection is a thorough visual and functional check performed by our certified technicians. It uses a color-coded system:

  • Green: Good
  • Yellow: Needs Attention Soon
  • Red: Needs Immediate Attention

It checks critical components, including:

  • Fluid levels and condition
  • Brake pad thickness
  • Tire tread depth and pressure
  • Battery health (especially important for the Bolt EV)
  • The condition of belts, hoses, and suspension components

This ensures total safety for driving in the Hocking County area.
