2026 Chevy Colorado vs Ford Ranger vs Toyota Tacoma: Midsize Truck Comparison

All three received major redesigns and now compete more directly than ever. Here is a head-to-head on power, off-road, resale, and price.

The midsize truck segment has gotten more interesting and more competitive in the past few years. The Chevy Colorado, Ford Ranger, and Toyota Tacoma all received major redesigns and now compete more directly than ever. Here is a head-to-head comparison.

Powertrain Options

The 2026 Colorado offers one engine, a 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, in three output tunes. The base tune produces 237 horsepower, the mid tune produces 310 horsepower, and the high-output tune produces 310 horsepower with even more torque. All three pair with an eight-speed automatic.

The Ford Ranger offers a 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder producing 270 horsepower, plus the high-output 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6 producing 405 horsepower in the Ranger Raptor.

The Toyota Tacoma offers a 2.4-liter turbocharged i-Force four-cylinder producing up to 278 horsepower with an eight-speed automatic, a six-speed manual transmission on certain trims, and an i-Force MAX hybrid producing 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque.

Each manufacturer takes a different path. Chevy keeps it simple with one engine in three tunes. Ford goes both ways with a strong base engine and a high-output Raptor variant. Toyota offers the only hybrid midsize truck and the only manual transmission.

Towing and Payload

When properly equipped, the Colorado tows up to 7,700 pounds. The Ranger tows up to 7,500 pounds. The Tacoma tows up to 6,500 pounds. The Colorado has a real advantage in maximum towing capacity over the Tacoma, with the Ranger close behind.

For most midsize truck buyers towing a small boat, a single-axle utility trailer, or a small camper, all three are well within capability.

Off-Road Trims

The Colorado offers an unusually deep off-road lineup. The Trail Boss adds suspension and tire upgrades. The ZR2 includes Multimatic DSSV dampers, electronic locking differentials front and rear, 33-inch tires, and a wider stance than the standard Colorado. The ZR2 Bison goes further with AEV-built reinforced underbody armor, AEV bumpers, 35-inch all-terrain tires, beadlock-capable wheels, and styling that signals serious purpose.

The Ford Ranger offers the Ranger Tremor for general off-road use and the Ranger Raptor for high-speed performance with FOX live valve shocks, 33-inch all-terrain tires, and 405 horsepower.

The Toyota Tacoma offers TRD Off-Road for general trail use, TRD Pro for high-speed off-road performance with the hybrid powertrain, and the Trailhunter trim for overlanding with ARB suspension components and an integrated air compressor.

The Colorado ZR2 Bison and Ranger Raptor are arguably the two most capable factory-built midsize off-road trucks on the market. The Tacoma TRD Pro and Trailhunter take a slightly different approach, prioritizing hybrid efficiency and overlanding capability respectively.

Interior

The Colorado interior was redesigned recently and is competitive with both rivals, with available 11.3-inch touchscreen and modern Google Built-In integration. The Ranger interior is competent and modern, with a vertical SYNC 4 touchscreen. The Tacoma interior was significantly upgraded in the current generation, with an available 14-inch touchscreen and the IsoDynamic Performance Seats on TRD Pro and Trailhunter (a feature unique in the segment).

Tacoma top trims feel a step more refined than Colorado or Ranger top trims. Colorado top trims (ZR2, Trail Boss, Z71) feel more functional and rugged.

Technology

The Colorado offers Google Built-In with native Google Maps and Google Assistant, available 11.3-inch touchscreen, and the latest Chevy Safety Assist suite. The Ranger offers SYNC 4, available BlueCruise hands-free driving, and FordPass connected services. The Tacoma offers the latest Toyota multimedia system, Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 standard, and an available 14-inch touchscreen.

All three are highly competitive. Chevy's Google integration is particularly polished if you live in the Google ecosystem.

Reliability and Resale Value

The Tacoma has historically held resale value better than nearly any other vehicle in the U.S. market, full stop. A two or three-year-old Tacoma typically commands a higher percentage of original sticker price than nearly any competitor in any segment.

The Colorado and Ranger are competitive on resale but typically a step behind the Tacoma. Both are reliable trucks; the Tacoma simply has a longer track record and stronger reputation.

Manual Transmission Availability

The Tacoma is the only midsize truck currently offering a six-speed manual transmission, available on TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and TRD PreRunner trims. For enthusiast buyers, this is a meaningful differentiator that neither the Colorado nor the Ranger can match.

Warranty

All three offer similar warranties: 3 years and 36,000 miles bumper to bumper, 5 years and 60,000 miles on the powertrain. Toyota Hybrid components on i-Force MAX Tacomas carry a 10-year/150,000-mile hybrid component warranty. Colorados purchased new at Don Wood Chevrolet qualify for our Lifetime Powertrain Warranty when the owner follows the recommended maintenance schedule.

Price

Pricing is closely matched across the three. Each starts in the low-to-mid $30,000 range and reaches above $60,000 in halo trims (Colorado ZR2 Bison, Ranger Raptor, Tacoma TRD Pro and Trailhunter). Specific deal value depends on incentives.

Verdict

The Colorado wins on maximum towing, the most extreme off-road capability with the ZR2 Bison, Google integration, and our Lifetime Powertrain Warranty. The Tacoma wins on resale value, hybrid availability, and manual transmission availability. The Ranger wins on the Raptor performance halo and BlueCruise hands-free driving.
